Mwagu, Mackdonald Schools environmental management urban Secondary schools environmental management A dissertation submitted in partial fulfilments of the requirements for award of the Degree of Master of Arts in Education (MAED) of the Mzumbe University This study aimed at analysing the role of schools in Environmental Management (EM) in Tanzania using urban secondary schools in Morogoro Municipality as a case study. The study specifically focused at revealing the schools‟ role in environmental management in Tanzania. This was done in consideration of a school as a place for transformation of the societal behaviour. The study was supported by national and international empirical researches and theoretical published works by different scholars. Both qualitative and quantitative approaches under a case study design were employed. The sampling procedures used include purposive sampling and random sampling in selecting a sample size of 72 respondents. The sources of data were primary and secondary sources whereas collection methods applied in data collection were interview and questionnaires. Data analysis was conducted through content analysis, whereas data collected through questionnaires were organized using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software for a meaningful interpretation. The findings show that secondary schools were taking considerable efforts in environmental management. Students were taught environmental management education inside and outside the classrooms through extra-curricular activities, such as debates and environmental clubs. The study also revealed that, not all the schools were implementing environmental management thus a varying role. Moreover the study found that lack of teaching and learning facilities, insufficient time and lack of funds were among the challenges hindering the environmental management in the schools. The study has recommended that environment management education should be given a priority in secondary schools. Teachers should have in-service training to raise their competence in teaching environmental education. Tanzania Institute of Education (TIE) should prepare curriculum materials for environment management education.
